DJ Chrisbe’s Song of the Week #24: I’ve Found A New Baby

As you might know, I love finding new versions of I've Found A New Baby (or: I Found A New Baby), one of my alltime favourites.

Here is another wonderful version of that tune, a radio broadcast (called «War Bond Broadcast») from 1942 by Tommy Dorsey and his Orchestra, recorded on 16th October at the Treasury Show in Hollywood.

Actually I don't know that much about these shows or broadcasts. I suppose they were done for collecting money respectively selling war bonds to finance military operations during World War II (?).

Most of the recordings of «I've Found A New Baby» are pretty fast. Dorsey's version is different: I play this song quite often for lindy hoppers (and sometimes for balboa dancers as well).

It has the perfect tempo with a great driving rhythm. The vocals by Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford and Dick Haymes in the second part of the song make this version even more special.

For the first time Herräng Dance Camp offered a Swing Orchestra class, taught by the Carling Family (Carling Big Band). I attended this class as a rhythm guitarist and we all had a very inspiring week!

Hans Carling, father of the family and one of our teachers, mentioned different recordings, which are eminent in jazz history and which are references for all the following generations of jazz musicians.

The early jazz recordings by Louis Armstrong and his Hot Five belong to this collection, they have been a revolution in jazz history: here we hear for the first time improvisation. Before that, ragtime phrasing was the most common form of playing music.

Let's have a look at Muskrat Ramble. The jazz standard was written by Kid Ory and first recorded on February 26, 1926. It became the group's most frequently recorded piece.

During the New Orleans/Dixieland revival in the 30s and 40s, Muskrat Ramble was very popular and recorded many times by different artists.

The tune contains a 32-bar ensemble section at the beginning, followed by 16-bar solo sections for the trombone, cornet and clarinet. After the solos, an ensemble section of 32 bars is played, followed by a two-bar trombone tag.

Everybody who has been to Herrang last week, got the opportunity to be part of an amazing evening of live music in the fully packed Folket Hus.

Tuba Skinny from New Orleans were in the house and rocked the place like hell, their highly energetic performance was a blast! I have never seen that before in Herrang: there were almost more people listening than dancing!!

Who is Tuba Skinny? Their own description from the website:

Tuba Skinny is a band that takes its listeners back in time to the traditional dixieland jazz and old blues music of the nineteen twenties and thirties. The members have been playing together since meeting on the streets of New Orleans five years ago, & officially begat Tuba Skinny during the spring of 2009.

Our song of the week is Six Feet Down from their second album, released in February 2010. A pretty fast song in the New Orleans tradition with a wonderful washboard solo.

DJ Chrisbe’s Song of the Week #19: One O’Clock Jump

As I promised last week, I'll show you my current favourite version of One O'Clock Jump, it's by the Ernst Höllerhagen Quartett, recorded in 1943.

Ernst Höllerhagen (5.10.1912-11.7.1956) was a highly talented German clarinetist and saxophonist.

He played in several dance orchestras and belonged to the Original Teddies (by Teddy Stauffer) in 1939.

When Jazz was prohibited by the Nazis at the beginning of the Second World War he left Germany and went into exile in Switzerland.

In Switzerland he led his own band for a while, with the rhythm section of the former Teddy Stauffer Orchestra.

Zürich Balboa Night am 9. Juli 2010

Ich freue mich, die nächste Zürich Balboa Night anzukündigen – der einzige monatliche Balboa Event in der Schweiz! Im Juli findet sie ausnahmsweise am zweiten Freitag im Monat statt :-). Es ist die letzte Balboa Night vor der Sommerpause, darum auf keinen Fall verpassen!

Diesen Monat organisieren wir wie gewohnt einen Balboa Mini-Workshop. Die Registration ist ab sofort offen. Bitte meldet euch an, wenn ihr teilnehmen möchtet! Am liebsten gleich mit Partner/in an, dies ist aber keine Pflicht, wir werden darum besorgt sein, die Klasse ausgeglichen zu gestalten.

Wir werden immer wieder gefragt, ob es denn noch Platz hat im Mini-Workshop. Die Antwort ist simpel: Solange die Registration offen ist, hat es Platz!
