DJ Chrisbe’s Song of the Week #94: Petite Fleur

19.12.2011 by Chris

During this week, my son will celebrate his first birthday! I dedicate this Song of the Week to him. Petite Fleur means «Little Flower» and I think, it suits perfectly to him.

This beautiful and sentimental song was composed by Sidney Bechet, my personal king of the soprano saxophone. He recorded it several times in the fifties with different formations.

After performing as a soloist at the Salle Pleyel Jazz Festival in Paris, Bechet decided to move to France in 1950 where he spent the rest of his life. There he was a major celebrity and national hero.

Before his death from lung cancer in 1959 at age 62, he was playing many concerts and recordings, and from time to time he went back to visit the U.S.

Now sit back and enjoy «Petite Fleur»…

…there is nothing more to add!

Lindy Hop & Balboa Scenes In Switzerland – Where To Dance

03.06.2011 by Chris

Lindy Hop & Balboa Scenes In Switzerland - Where To DanceI often get asked by visiting swing dancers where to dance in Switzerland.

So I thought, I write this short post to give you an overview, where you can dance Lindy Hop, Balboa and Blues in our country and what the groups in the different cities are which organize classes and events.

On a side note: The Swiss swing dance scene is probably one of the oldest in Europe. Swiss dancers were the first foreign visitors in Herrang at the end of the 1980s…

DJ Chrisbe’s Song of the Week #33: Chimes Blues

18.10.2010 by Chris

While teaching a workshop about jazz and swing music history, I had the idea to post from time to time a song which had a great impact to (early) jazz music.

On August 8, 1922, Louis Armstrong moved from New Orleans to Chicago to join King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band.

At the Lincoln Gardens, they developed their cornet duet style («breaks»): Armstrong played a second cornet line while Oliver was playing the first cornet.

With Armstrong as a member, the already popular band took Chicago by storm.

On April 5, 1923, Oliver and Armstrong travelled by train from Chicago to Richmond Indiana to make their first recordings at Gennett Records.

One title they recorded was Chimes Blues and this recording is a milestone in history. Armstrong improvised with such a great intensity nobody had ever heard before.

Title: Chimes Blues
Artist: King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band
Recorded: 6.4.1923
Tempo: 161 bpm
Genre: Early Jazz
