Dancing The Big Apple 1937 – DVD Review

In 1937, the U.S. were struggling to recover from the Great Depression when in August the country went into a new recession.

In the same month The Big Apple dance craze took off and almost everybody got infected by the virus.

Judy Pritchett did a lot of research about The Big Apple and made a DVD called «Dancing The Big Apple 1937«, which she presented this summer in Herräng.

As the narrator of the documentary, Judy tells us the story about that phenomenon back in the late 30s, where it started, how it evolved and especially interesting, where the roots are, namely in the African culture and in the (religious) ring shouts.

The documentary is sprinkled with a lot of pictures, footages and news paper extracts.

The DVD «Dancing The Big Apple 1937» consists of three parts:

  1. History: 30 minutes documentary
  2. Instruction: Lance Benishek is demonstrating steps from the popular Big Apple, followed by a Big Apple Contest for students with called steps
  3. Choreography: The famous Big Apple choreography by Frankie Manning from «Keep Punching» featuring Whiteys Lindy Hoppers

My Rating

I'm a big fan of documentaries anyway. I highly recommend the DVD to everybody who is interested in the Afroamerican Vernacular Jazz Dance history and culture.

We all know the Big Apple choreography by Frankie Manning, but originally it was not a choreographed dance.

Judy – who's voice is very pleasant to listen to – gives us a lot of valuable insights about the origins.

Maybe one critic point: the structure of the documentary may sometimes be a little bit confusing. Nevertheless, buy the DVD today!

By the way, the documentary is invited to the Sans Souci Festival of Dance Cinema in Boulder, Colorado (Friday & Saturday, September 10 & 11, 2010). Congratulations from Shuffle Projects!

The Big Apple war in der Schweizer Swingszene lange nur Insidern bekannt. Kaum jemand konnte die Routine tanzen, geschweige denn unterrichten. In letzter Zeit hat sich das geändert, natürlich auch, weil Solo Jazz an internationalen Camps wieder einen höheren Stellenwert erhalten hat. Vielerorts werden Solo Jazz-Klassen unterrichtet (Stir It!) oder sogar eine ganze Woche gewidmet (Herräng, Eauze).

The Big Apple – das ist doch ein anderer Name für New York!

Ja. Auch. In der Swing Community meint man mit «The Big Apple» in der Regel die Choreographie, welche auf der von Frankie Manning choreographierten Routine der Whitey's Lindy Hoppers im Kinofilm Keep Punchin› von 1937 basiert.

Ursprünglich war der «Big Apple» jedoch nicht choreographiert, sondern ausgerufen. Die Tänzer und Tänzerinnen formen einen Ring und ein Rufer ruft verschiedene Solo Jazz und Charleston Moves aus, die dann von allen ausgeführt werden.

Wer schon immer einmal den Big Apple (Choreographie) lernen wollte, hat nun die Möglichkeit, dies Schritt für Schritt zu tun. Patrick Szmidt & Natasha Ouimet aus Montréal haben kürzlich eine 14-teilige Lern-Videoserie in HD-Qualität auf YouTube veröffentlicht.

Zürich Balboa Night am 9. Juli 2010

Ich freue mich, die nächste Zürich Balboa Night anzukündigen – der einzige monatliche Balboa Event in der Schweiz! Im Juli findet sie ausnahmsweise am zweiten Freitag im Monat statt :-). Es ist die letzte Balboa Night vor der Sommerpause, darum auf keinen Fall verpassen!

Diesen Monat organisieren wir wie gewohnt einen Balboa Mini-Workshop. Die Registration ist ab sofort offen. Bitte meldet euch an, wenn ihr teilnehmen möchtet! Am liebsten gleich mit Partner/in an, dies ist aber keine Pflicht, wir werden darum besorgt sein, die Klasse ausgeglichen zu gestalten.

Wir werden immer wieder gefragt, ob es denn noch Platz hat im Mini-Workshop. Die Antwort ist simpel: Solange die Registration offen ist, hat es Platz!
